Pre-Season look into the Cougars

The Cougar sports season is upon us.  Here’s a glimpse into the upcoming season.

There are 33 players from Niobrara and Verdigre out for football this year.  The Niobrara players are: Seniors - Jacob Johnson*, Shane Hrbek, Trenton Guenther*, Steven LaPointe*; Juniors - Cade Kalkowski*, Tanner Hrbek, Tommy Stark*; Sophomores - Jace Fritz, Jacob Tuttle, Nate Sandoz, Dillan Hrbek; Freshman - Kobe Keo,  Gabe James, Dakota Crosley, Bryce Stark, and Joseph Moose.  Head coach is Doug Konopasek, assistant coach is JJ Parks, and aides are Kyle Konopasek and Darren McElhose.  Coach Parks says “We have to replace some senior starters, but have a pretty solid group. We are putting our best players on the field and are looking forward to spoiling some teams’ seasons with our victories.”  They open this Friday against Creighton here at Niobrara.  Game time is 7:00 p.m.

The volleyball team is being led by head coach Kelsie Mitteis, assistant coach Jenny Bauer, and volunteer assistant coach Sandy Liska.  There are 18 players and 3 student managers from Niobrara and Verdigre on the team.  Niobrara players are: Juniors – Brittany Eisenhauer*, Hannah Stark*, Dani Beaudette*; Sophomore – Ashley Guenther;  Freshman – Isabel Rife, Genesis Saul, Kendra Hrbek, Jeanene Henry; and 6th grader Makenna Guenther.  Coach Bauer has the following insight into the team, “The Niobrara Lady Cougars have been putting forth great efforts and showing tremendous improvements and gains this past week in practice. We are looking forward to a positive volleyball season filled with teamwork, communication, and leadership on and off the court!”  The Lady Cougars kick off their season Thursday September 4th at Verdigre with a triangular against Creighton and Osmond.  Game times are 4:30, 5:30, and 6:30 p.m.

The Cross Country team has been training hard for their first meet Monday, September 8, at the Niobrara State Park.  The meet begins at 4:20 p.m.  Head coach is Stacy Ludwig and Mary Snowdon is the assistant coach.  Coach Snowdon had this to say about the team “We are green without much base of conditioning.  They are working hard as the season gets started.  We are looking for improvements every meet.”  There are 10 high school and 2 junior high students on the team from Niobrara and Verdigre.  Niobrara runners are Senior Xavior Sagaste, Junior Larissa McCardle, Sophomores Isaac Justo and Masi LaPointe and 7th grader Ken Justo.
