Music Booster Meeting Minutes- Wednesday, October 9, 2013

October 11, 2013

  1. Cake Raffle – Thursday, Oct. 17 – VB Parents Night:
    1. Possibly put in Niobrara-Verdigre Papers for the week
    2. Send note home with kids that week, call from school.
    3. Put on the Marquee that week.
    4. Students may bring homemade baked goods; store bought baked goods, 2-liter pop/candy, or what you would like to win at a Cake Raffle.
    5. Students not attending the game that evening will bring raffle items that day to school.  Mrs. Stark will keep it locked in her room.
    6. Students attending the game can bring it that day or prior to the raffle.
    7. Students will volunteer to work the raffle.
  1. Soup Supper – Tuesday, October 29 – NVC VB Tournament:
    1. Decided on Chili & Chicken Noodle Soup to be served.
    2. Send a letter home asking for donations for either materials to make soups, roasters, workers, or monetary to help defray the costs.
    3. Flyers advertising the event will go to:
      1. Niobrara/Verdigre Newspapers – Steph Moody
      2. Schools involved in the tournament
      3. KBRX
      4. KK93 – Sharon Scott
      5. Santee Radio Station – Misty
      6. School Marquee and town Marquee
    4. Nepthys volunteered to make chili (need more volunteers)
    5. Mrs. Stark volunteered to make chicken noodle (need volunteers)
    6. Ms. Angie Guenther volunteered chickens for the soup.
    7. Mark Reynolds volunteered to get:  bowls, plates, cutlery, napkins, 2 roasters, and big orange drink container.
    8. Other needs:  Hamburger, Chili beans, tomato juice, onions, peppers, crackers, noodles, chicken broth or bullion, carrots, tea, cups, drink containers.
    9. OR – monetary donation to help offset costs.
    10. The supper will be a free will donation – all you can eat/soup supper.


  1. Fundraising:
    1. Discussed going on trips.
      1. Small group is going to Celebrate Creativity on October 30 in Omaha, NE.  Ms. Stark and Mrs. Arens wrote a grant to cover entrance and mileage costs.  20 students and 2 teachers are going.
      2.  Would like to take all 7-12 band/choir kids to the Orpheum in Omaha this spring to see a Japanese drumming group.  More information later.  Not set, just a thought.
      3. Discussed instrument availability for students in 5thgrade.
        1. We have the following instruments available for starting:  2 flutes, 2 saxes, 1 french horn, 2 trumpets, 1 baritone, 1 bells/percussion, 1-2 drums.  That is 11 instruments for school usage.
        2. Parents at the meeting are willing to purchase an instrument for their child.
        3. Parents attending were divided on lessons after school.  Some don’t mind, while other students are not able to do this after school.  Ms. Stark/Ms. Guenther can put together a schedule for band practice during music class – BUT – remember this is a 6 day rotating schedule, and your child’s band day would be on a different day each time! 
        4. I do have one 15-minute block from 10:30 to 10:45 where I could give up to 3 lessons a week.  This would be strictly for kids who can’t come after school.
        5. Ms. Stark has received back ½ of the band notes sent out to parents about who wishes to play.  We need those back in to get an idea of who is wanting to start.
        6. Parent meeting for all beginning students/parents will need to be set up before the end of October.  The sooner the better.
        7. Many things were discussed:  Is band mandatory this year?  If it is, shouldn’t time be carved out in the school day instead of after school?  Music Boosters help with costs, Letter to community about donating used instruments or donating financially for purchase.  Donor Choose Website where we put our needs and people donate to our cause.
