Powerlifting Meet at Lexington 12/3/22

Nineteen lifters from the Niobrara-Verdigre powerlifting team traveled to Lexington this past Saturday, December 3rd for the Lexington Powerlifting Championships.  It was a large meet (230 lifters!) with a line-up of very stiff competition.  The Cougars competed as the smallest school but were up to the challenge, eager to compete, and came home with 3rd place trophies in the Co-ed and Girls team divisions!  We can be proud of the manner in which our students represented our schools and communities.  The kids are working hard and encouraging each other.  Powerlifting momentum is growing each week.

Final team standings...

With so many lifters competing, all of the weight classes had a very large number of contestants.  This meant that medaling, or even finishing in the top half of your weight class, was a huge accomplishment!

We had one individual gold medal winner… Gabrielle Pavlik (198 lb class).  Gavin Rardon (275+ lb class), Gwen Bonham (97 lb class), Chelsey Rohrer (165 lb class), and RaeLynne Nelson (181 lb class) were bronze medalists .

Other medal winners… Gunnar Shabram 4th place (220 lb class); Raquel Morales-Montalvo 4th place (198+ lb class); Lorenzo Denny 5th place (275+ lb class); Melody Bonham 5th place (114 lb class).  Alex Motacek (114 lb) and Isaac Pavlik (220 lb) each finished in 7th place in their respective weight classes.  Westin Bauer (148 lb class), Jacob Motacek (165 lb class), Jordon Ingebo (181 lb class), and Dylan Davidson (198 lb class) each totaled over 700 lbs lifted but just missed medaling.  Our other lifters who competed in extremely deep and difficult weight classes were Wyatt Shabram (132 lb class), Jase Kotrous (148 lb class), Emmarie Pavlik (148 lb class), and Kami Simons (148 lb class).  All lifters set personal bests in each lift.  This outstanding effort led to some new team records being set.  For the girls… Gabrielle Pavlik set the team record in squat, bench press, deadlift, and three-lift total (810 lbs).  For the boys… Gunnar Shabram set the team record in squat, bench press, and three-lift total (1025 lbs) making him the first Cougar lifter to total over 1000 lbs!  Gavin Rardon still owns the boys deadlift record, and Chelsey Rohrer still owns the girls strength index record.

The next powerlifting meet currently on the schedule for Niobrara-Verdigre will be the Peru State Powerlifting Meet on January 14th.  We then have the Verdigre Powerlifting Meet February 25th, followed by the Class D state powerlifting meet scheduled for March 25th at Harvard High School.  The Orchard AAU Powerlifting Meet is set for April 1st.  GO COUGARS!
