Nebraska SMART is a free virtual tutoring program for students in grades K-12. Teacher education candidates from Chadron State, Peru State, and Wayne State Colleges remotely tutor students in Educational Service Units 1, 4, and 13 through an online tutoring platform. This program is made possible by a Nebraska Department of Education grant awarded to the Nebraska State College System to launch a rural tutoring program.
Nebraska SMART’s official launch date to tutor students in grades K-12 is February 5, 2024. Tutoring hours are 3:30-6:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
The Nebraska SMART Video can be viewed for more information.
Parents who wish to gain access to tutoring must register their child(ren) by visiting www.nscs.edu/
Parents must first create an account and register their child(ren). Once parents have created their account and added their child(ren), the student (or parent on their behalf) can schedule a tutoring appointment. Students can also join on-demand tutoring to be connected with the next available Tutor.
The Parent Guide provides steps for parents to register their child(ren), schedule a session, request on-demand tutoring, and more.
Students should provide homework for which they wish to receive help or topics that they would like to cover. When connected to a Tutor, students (or parents on their behalf) can share files with their Tutor. It is recommended that students (or parents on their behalf) have saved their homework to their computer prior to connecting to a Tutor.
The Nebraska SMART tutoring platform can be accessed via a laptop, desktop, or Chromebook. Please note that smartphones and some tablets are not currently supported by this platform. See below for Nebraska SMART’s technology requirements.
Twenty-three lifters from the Niobrara-Verdigre powerlifting team made the long trip to North Platte High School Saturday, February 3rd to compete in a new type of team contest... a powerlifting dual vs. the North Platte Bulldogs. The meet was run similar to a wrestling dual meet. N-V competitors lifted vs. their corresponding weight class competitor from North Platte in a 1-on-1 format. Scores were calculated by wins in each contest (squat, bench press, deadlift) for each lifter with five points awarded for each contest victory (three points awarded to each lifter in case of a tie), so a maximum of fifteen points could be earned per lifter. The girls have ten weight classes ranging from 97 lbs to 198+ lbs. Boys have eleven weight classes ranging from 114 lbs to 275+ lbs. The Cougar lifters competed very well with numerous personal bests while bumping up to new weight pound clubs. There were also two new boys school records set Saturday. Isaac Pavlik broke Gunnar Shabram’s school record in the squat with 395 lbs. Westin Bauer broke Cody Wickersham’s school record for strength index (total weight lifted divided by body weight) with an index of 5.67. Very well done kids!
In the girls contest Niobrara-Verdigre defeated North Platte by a score of 98-53. In the boys contest North Platte outscored N-V by a score of 105-60. In the combined Co-ed division the Cougars tied the Bulldogs in total points scored.
Lifters scoring wins… Alex Motacek (15 pts) in 114 lb class. Wyatt Shabram (15 pts) in 148 lb class. Westin Bauer (5 pts) in 165 lb class. Jacob Motacek (5 pts) and Coy Wickersham (5 pts) in 181 lb class. Jordon Ingebo (5 pts) in 220 lb class. Lorenzo Denny (10 pts) in 275+ lb class. Christine Mechaley (10 pts) in 97 lb class. Gwen Bonham (15 pts) in 105 lb class. Melody Bonham (10 pts) in 114 lb class. Holly Pavlik (15 pts) in 132 lb class. Kami Simons (10 pts) in 148 lb class. Emmarie Pavlik (5 pts) in 148 lb class. Miranda Stohlmann (5 pts) in 165 lb class. Aliyah Yunker (10 pts) in 181 lb class. Taylor Pavlik (5 pts) in 181 lb class. Raquel Morales-Montalvo (15 pts) in 198+ lb class.
Other lifters competing against a tough Class A lifter in their weight class were Landyn Frank (123 lb class), Danny Pease (132 lb class), Izaak Vakoc (198 lb class), Isaac Pavlik (242 lb class), Sydney Kumm (123 lb class), and RaeLynne Nelson (198 lb class).
This meet was perfect timing to get the high school lifters ready for the 3rd annual Verdigre Powerlifting Meet on Saturday, February 24th. High school and jr. high lifters (along with a few 5th & 6th grade exhibition lifters) will be competing in front of the home crowd. We have our work cut out for us this year as the meet has grown exponentially over the past couple of years. The meet will have close to 180 lifters representing over 15 schools! Lifting begins at 9:00 am that morning. GO COUGARS!
Eighteen lifters from the Niobrara-Verdigre powerlifting team made the cold trip to Parkview Christian High School in Lincoln Saturday, January 20th to compete in the Capital City Clash which is a sanctioned Powerlifting America Meet. The lifters competed very well with everyone bringing home individual hardware. This meet was an open meet with no team contests or awards… just individual medals.
Lifters representing Ottawa University in Kansas; Midland University; Watertown, SD; Norfolk HS; Lincoln Club; Minnesota USAPL; Florida USAPL; Denver, CO; and Louisana Raw were among those competing Saturday in addition to our N-V Cougars.
Fourteen gold medals were earned by N-V lifters… Alex Motacek 59 kg class, Wyatt Shabram 66 kg class, Beckett Wessendorf 74 kg class, Lorenzo Denny 120+ kg class, Christine Mechaley 43 kg class, Sydney Kumm 47 kg class, Melody Bonham 52 kg class, Billie Pritchett 57 kg class, Heidi Hollmann 69 kg class, Emmarie Pavlik 76 kg class (bench only), Miranda Stohlmann 76 kg, Taylor Pavlik 84 kg class, RaeLynne Nelson 84+ kg class (equipped), and Raquel Morales-Montalvo 84+ kg class (raw). Three lifters earned silver medals… Arlan Lammers 83 kg class, Isaac Pavlik 105 kg class, and Aliyah Yunker 84 kg class. Izaak Vakoc earned bronze in the 53 kg class. Congratulations to all of our lifters!
Our next meet is a dual competition vs. North Platte High School in North Platte on Saturday, Feb. 3 starting at 2:00 pm. Then, the entire Niobrara-Verdigre powerlifting team would like to invite everyone to Verdigre High School on Saturday, February 24th for the 3rd annual Verdigre Powerlifting Meet. This is a meet for both jr. high AND high school lifters. We are super excited to lift in front of the home crowd and hopefully put on a show! It will be a lineup of very tough competition with schools attending from around the state. Lifting starts at 9:00 am that morning. GO COUGARS!
Niobrara School Families:
Our thoughts are with the Perry Community in Iowa. Events like these, broadcasted across national and social media platforms, have a heartfelt impact on all of us and bring school safety and security to the forefront of our minds.
Now is the time to engage in conversations with student(s) both in our schools and at home about safety/security, mental health, and where to access support if needed. A supportive adult who listens and offers guidance and resources is an effective preventive measure when students encounter feelings and situations they may be unsure of how to manage.
Anonymous Reporting is another avenue for students to seek out support and report concerns in schools or at home. Safe2Help NE, now funded permanently by the Nebraska Legislature, offers this free service to schools. The reports made to the Safe2Help NE system go directly to Boys Town Communication Center Crisis Counselors and are available 24 hours a day to all students at Niobrara Schools.
Niobrara Schools ensures that our school Emergency Operations Plans are up-to-date and that both students and staff are well-versed in the Standard Response Protocol procedures. We encourage you to take a moment to check in with your child(ren) and review any protocols for emergency or crisis situations.
Niobrara Public Schools values our ongoing partnership with our school families and the communities we serve. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Take care and stay safe,
