Varsity Football vs. Humphrey/ Lindsey Holy Family Bulldogs-Friday, August 25, 2023

The Niobrara-Verdigre Cougar football team opened the 2023 football season this past Friday, August 25 when the Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family Bulldogs traveled to Verdigre.  The Cougars came away with a 28-14 win.

The first half started off with the Cougars sputtering their way to an early 0-14 deficit.  The N-V offense had some success moving the ball into the redzone, but untimely penalties would bog them down.  Defensively the Cougars played a little tentatively allowing those two early scores to Humphrey/LHF, but adjustments were made and the defense responded by holding the Bulldogs out of the redzone the rest of the game while allowing only 85 yards of total offense to H/LHF.  Then with under 3 minutes in the first half the Cougar offense found some success with two Kellen Vesely TD runs (PATs failed).  The second score came with under 20 seconds in the half.

Halftime score… N-V 12 Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family 14.

The second half was a story of solid defensive play by the Cougars and two scoring drives by the Cougar offense in the 4th quarter.  Each scoring drive was set up with a short field.  The first came on a sack of the punter deep in Bulldog territory by Isaac Pavlik and Coy Wickersham.  That short drive ended with a Cash Wickersham 1 yard TD run (Cody Wickersham PAT run).  The second score was set up with an Isaac Pavlik fumble recovery which led to another Cash Wickersham TD run.  This time from 3 yards out (Cash Wickersham PAT run).

Final score… N-V 28 Humphrey/Lindsay HF 14.

It wasn’t the prettiest game, but besides the early penalties, the Cougars played fairly clean football (no turnovers!).  Niobrara-Verdigre is back in action this Friday, Sept. 1st at 6:00 pm in Creighton vs. another solid Bulldog football team.  GO COUGARS!
