JV Football @ Wynot 08/28/23
The Niobrara-Verdigre Cougar JV football team opened the 2023 season Monday night, Aug. 28 in Wynot with a 22-36 loss to the Wynot Blue Devils.
The young Cougars played hard, but big plays would be their demise… long kickoff returns, QB runs, and deep passes. Offensively we would move the ball well at times, but just stall out or get behind the sticks with tackles for loss. Kash Nielsen scored on the first drive on a 1 yard QB sneak (Arlan Lammers PAT run). Then on the next offensive drive Kash Nielsen hit Layten Moody for a 26 yard TD pass (PAT failed). However, Wynot would score on all four of their first half possessions. Halftime score… N-V 14 Wynot 28.
The 2nd half saw more aggressive defense by the JV Cougars allowing Wynot to score only one more time. The offense opened up the passing game and outside running game and moved the ball well. After a scoreless third quarter by both teams, Kash Nielsen scored on a 1 yard QB sneak (Nielsen PAT pass to Layten Moody). That drive tightened up the game with a 22-28 score difference late in the game. But on the ensuing kickoff Wynot would score again on a big play… a 60 yard KO return for TD. The game ended N-V 22 Wynot 36.
The Cougars JV football team plays Boyd County JV in two weeks (Mon, Sept. 11) in Verdigre with a 7:00 pm kickoff. GO COUGARS!!
