Varsity Football vs. Creighton Bulldogs 09/01/2023
The Niobrara-Verdigre Cougar football team traveled to Creighton this past Friday, September 1st to take on the Bulldogs. The Cougars came away with a 26-12 win vs. a scrappy & aggressive Creighton team.
It was a very sloppy start to the game again this week. After a botched punt snap which put Creighton in the red zone inside the 10 yard line, the defense held Creighton on four straight plays. But the Cougar offense still couldn’t mount consistent drives while the defense played extremely hard. Score at the end of the first quarter was 0-0. Then early in the 2nd quarter the N-V special teams forced a safety on a Creighton punt. And on the very next defensive series for the Cougars, Coy Wickersham recovered a Creighton fumble in the end zone for TD (PAT failed).
Halftime score… N-V 8 Creighton 0.
The Creighton offense did make some nice adjustments in the second half to get their rushing attack back on track and had some success moving the ball against N-V. The Bulldogs drove their first possession down the field capped off by a short TD run (PAT failed). But the Cougars responded with a nice kick-off return inside the 10 yard line followed by a Cash Wickersham 5 yard TD run (PAT failed). Creighton would respond again with a 35 yard TD run (PAT failed). Then the Cougars said, “enough is enough.” Brady Koehn responded on the ensuing kick-off with a 70 yard return for TD (PAT failed). On the first play of the 4th quarter Cash Wickersham scored again on a 1 yard QB sneak (PAT failed). That made the score 26-12 which held up through the end of the game.
Final score… N-V 26 Creighton 12.
For the second straight week… it wasn’t the prettiest game, but the Cougars were able to make just enough plays and capitalize on Bulldog mistakes to come away with the victory. Niobrara-Verdigre is back in action this Friday, Sept. 8th at Walthill to take on a very athletic Blujay football team. It will be an afternoon game with kick-off at 3:00 pm. GO COUGARS!
